Learning at MPS
MPS Students Are Excited about Learning
Academics are the heart of a Marianapolis education, and each student thrives within a rigorous college preparatory course of study. Marianapolis nurtures students to become responsible and independent learners, as well as challenges students with an exciting and extensive program emphasizing breadth of intellectual exposure, depth of study, and significant out-of-class preparation.
Consisting of core traditional academic subjects, the curriculum reflects the richness and diversity of a broad spectrum of cultures. The curriculum fosters the development of critical and disciplined thinking, precise communication and scientific analysis, creative problem solving, careful and logical thinking, and understanding of the social, scientific, and political background of Western and non-Western civilization. At all grade levels, the curriculum encourages students to think critically, creatively, and independently, and to articulate ideas effectively.
All students take six courses; some students, with special permission, may take 61⁄2 or 7 courses. Advisors work closely with students to design a plan of study. In choosing courses, students and advisors consider the intellectual challenge of each course and of the student’s overall academic and extracurricular program. Advisors and students also discuss – with advice from the College Counseling Office – the student’s college aspirations. Juniors and seniors, in particular, consider MPS’s eight Advanced Placement offerings and Honors tier of study that are available to students seeking greater challenges. In addition to courses in English, history, math, science, and foreign language, broad offerings in the visual arts and music provide avenues of learning in which students may excel.
